Building A Renter Cooperative

My neighbors and I are fighting for our homes.My neighbors and I have a dream of purchasing the buildings we live in and turning them into housing cooperatives. We need your help to make this dream come true. We are working with United Renters for Justice to organize, train ourselves, learn how to run a cooperative and make sure none of us get evicted. Together, our neighbors have already raised $10,000 dollars, but we need your help to raise enough money to purchase our buildings.  Minneapolis is in a housing crisis, with families facing gentrification and displacement. I live with my son, Treyvon. I love where I live because it is diverse, we all support each other, we all spend time together, my son’s school is nearby and we even have a local farmers market twice a week. But now my landlord, Steve Frenz, is trying to evict me and my neighbors.In 2015 renters like me started to organize with United Renters For Justice for better repairs in buildings owned by Steve Frenz, because we were all experiencing cockroach and mice infestations, water leaks, mold, and a whole lot of other problems because he was neglecting our buildings. In 2018 the city revoked Steve Frenz’s rental licenses meaning he can’t rent out any buildings anymore in Minneapolis. Some of my fellow renters in his buildings also started a class action lawsuit, for which he will have to pay 18.5 million dollars back to us. Since then he has had to sell all of his buildings, and he has, except for 5 last buildings. In the last 5 buildings he owns, he is trying to evict everyone before selling them.
