Twin Cities Metro Resources

Minneapolis Resources

The Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association has a low-barrier fund for renters throughout Minneapolis. You can find more information here: https://www.ppna.org/renter-support-fund.

If you live in Minneapolis, call 311 to report building repairs and infestations. Remember to ask for your reference number during the call. The city of Minneapolis will send an inspector out to the building in 10 days or less.

Agate Housing and Services has a handbook with information and numbers to access food, shelter, public assistance, health care, education, employment, services for immigrants, and legal services.

Minnesota Resources

If you need help paying your rent or other housing costs, you can apply for benefits through MNbenefits at https://mnbenefits.mn.gov/.

For legal questions, we recommend HOME Line MN, which can be accessed at https://homelinemn.org/. If you get an eviction notice, you should call HOME Line MN (612-728-5767) and attend your eviction hearing. Don’t just move out! A notice of eviction is only the start of the process, not the end!

If you need help paying utility bills such as electric or gas, you may be eligible for the Energy Assistance Program.

LawHelpMN has a great guide if you have general questions about what to do before renting an apartment, your rights as a tenant, and explanations of how a rent escrow and an Emergency Tenant Remedies Action (ETRA) work. The same guide also has forms and templates about responding to a landlord who has violated a lease.

Wondering about the new tenant protections enacted during the 2023 state legislative cycle? HOME Line MN has a quick guide explaining all protections and new laws.

The Minnesota Attorney General’s office has a handbook dedicated to tenants’ and landlords’ rights and responsibilities. The handbook should not serve as legal advice, however. Additional federal rights apply to tenants in subsidized or federal housing.

National Resources

The National Housing Law Project has great resources for tenants, with trainings, reports, and other educational materials.
