Legal Resources

We have worked with many legal partners over the years to provide information, resources, and representation for tenants. Trusted legal partner resources are available online and over the phone:

  • HOME Line MNhttps://homelinemn.org - HOME Line MN provides free and low-cost legal, organizing, education, and advocacy services for all tenants in Minnesota. HOME Line does not provide representation in court, only over-the phone counseling. HOME Line’s tenant hotline (612-728-5767; toll-free from Greater Minnesota: 866-866-3546) and their “E-mail An Attorney” option provide free and confidential legal advice for Minnesota renters. They are a good first-call resource.

  • Mid-Minnesota Legal Aidhttp://mylegalaid.org/get-help - Legal Aid provides legal representation and advice to low-income individuals, families, seniors, and people with disabilities to meet basic human needs. To connect with an attorney, you can call the Intake Line at 612-334-5970 or 1-800-292-4150.

    • There is also a statewide number, 877-696-6529, that can help connect you to the legal aid that serves your region.

    • Note: Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid does not serve all Minnesota counties. You can find other Minnesota legal housing providers here.

  • MN Attorney General - Minnesota Tenant Report Form – If your landlord’s actions feel like intimidation or retaliation, REPORT IT! If you can’t navigate the form you can call the consumer complaint line at (651) 296-3353.

  • Volunteer Lawyers Networkhttps://www.vlnmn.org/about-vln/what-we-do - The Volunteer Lawyers Network provides free legal representation for low-income clients involved in civil cases.

  • Housing Justice Centerhttps://www.hjcmn.org/ - The Housing Justice Center engages in high-impact housing litigation in MN, and challenges illegal rent increases and violations of federal programs.

  • Landlords and Tenants: Rights and Responsibilitieshttps://www.ag.state.mn.us/Consumer/Handbooks/LT/default.asp - This handbook describes the rights of landlords and tenants in Minnesota. It should not serve as legal advice, however. Additional federal rights apply to tenants in subsidized or federal housing.

  • Legal Rights Centerhttps://www.legalrightscenter.org/ - The Legal Rights Center specializes in providing free legal support to low-income people in criminal cases. They don’t work on evictions.
